WAS (Web Accessibility Specialist) is required
Serving as technical subject matter expert
The successful candidate serves as the point of technical
reference for all queries relating to accessibility, drawing on a forensic
understanding of accessible front end development and confidently guiding
development teams in solving complex accessibility problems. The application of
web accessibility technologies such as WAI-ARIA should be second nature, and a
deep, thorough understanding of users’ needs – preferably garnered from lengthy
experience of working closely with users over many years – is crucial. The candidate
must be able to proactively recognize issues and then explain both the
underlying causes and solutions in a clear, cogent manner that is meaningful
even to team members who may be new to accessible development, all the while
building trust and relationships.
Evangelizing and driving cultural change
Spreading awareness and raising the profile of
accessibility to colleagues and management should come naturally, as the
successful candidate will be strongly and personally involved in the
accessibility community and a “true believer”; accessibility is a vocation for
this person rather than just a job. To this end, strong presentation and communication
skills are highly desirable in delivering an effective message. The candidate
will inspire and educate in an effort to drive cultural change and promote
awareness throughout the organization at both a strategic and tactical level.
Auditing
When called upon the candidate should be able to act as an
extremely efficacious auditor, using a rigorously methodical approach and
calling on deep experience to look at any application (irrespective of the
underlying technology), wireframe or UX flow and call out the areas for
attention.
